Gastro in Paradise

Number of nights:

So the trip didn’t begin so well…

After eating a memorable farewell dinner at my parents the night before, Dominique was sick from both ends practically every 30 minutes, from the moment we got up at 4:30 a.m. to catch our flight from Montreal to Vancouver, to when we landed in Hawaii, 2 airports and 18 hours later.

If you think being sick on a plane is a nightmare, imagine trying to hold it in while waiting in line to take off your shoes to pass through security! I don’t know how she did it, but she managed to time her purging while in a relatively safe areas (although the one near the duty-free shop was pretty close, thank god the bags they use are plastic). Thankfully she pulled through being the trooper that she is and we made it to Hawaii in one piece.

It took about three days for her to work her way back up to 100%, and although she was pretty much bedridden throughout her recovery, she at least had a great view:

Apparently rice is one of the recommended foods to eat when recovering from gastro, and as luck would have it, there was a McDonald’s nearby. But wait, McD’s doesn’t have rice, right?! Not in Hawaii! They serve rice for their localized breakfast menu items, which also includes Spam and Portuguese sausage! I brought it to her and rejoiced when she was able to keep it down (the rice that is, no way would she eat the sausage and spam, which was good for me since I wanted them).

So things were looking up, and almost as if nature itself was letting us know it was safe to go out and see the world, that evening we were treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets ever:

Believe the postcards, Hawaii is beautiful!
