Heading south, we decided to check out the area around Mount Taranaki, a very symmetrical volcano. We camped in Oakura, a small town by the west coast, at a campsite right by the beach. Although the area was windy, we had a very peaceful evening that brought us some wonderful light and a very colourful sunset.
This was a five minute walk from our campsite on the beach. In the distance you can see the an ugly smokestack from New Plymouth, which pretty much added itself to the area’s skyline of natural rock formations.
A better view of Paritutu Rock, the ugly smokestack, and emo Dominique.
To make matters even more peaceful, people were walking their horses along the beach.
Cape Egmont Lighthouse, with Mount Taranaki in the background.
My beautiful Fernadette, waiting obediently while we go take pictures of the sailboarders.
It was extremely windy where we were, but not windy enough for these sailboarders. They looked they were riding at 80 mph!
Nearby we read there was a shipwreck, which we decided to investigate. We parked on the edge of a gravel road and walked down to a beautiful park.
This was said shipwreck. I’m still trying to decide whether it was worth the 45 minute walk.
It was worth the 45 minute walk, as the sun was giving the clouds some beautiful colours as it set.
Back at the beach, we saw even more beautiful colours. This was taken from our camping spot.
Our camping spot the following morning. Not a bad view to wake up to!
